Quick answer

Plumbing in the Old North End means working on houses well over a century old: the historic district along North Weber between Boulder and Del Norte reflects building styles from 1885 to 1965. Expect layers of past repairs, galvanized supply, cast iron stacks and clay tile sewer laterals, and plaster walls that call for careful openings.

A historic district with a century of plumbing layers

The Old North End Historic District was listed on the National Register on December 17, 1982 and expanded in 2015. A house here may have been replumbed in pieces three or four times: original lines, a mid-century update, a later copper patch and a modern water heater, all still connected somewhere in the basement.

Our first visit is a walk through that history. We trace supply from the main to the farthest fixture, note every galvanized-to-copper joint (a common spot for corrosion to start), and look at the cast iron stack where it meets the floor. That map decides whether a single leak repair makes sense or the house is ready for a full repipe.

Clay tile sewer laterals a century old

Sewer laterals from the early 1900s were usually vitrified clay tile laid in short sections, and every joint is an opening for roots and soil movement. Colorado Springs Utilities holds the owner responsible for the line from the house to its main. In a neighborhood this old, that lateral can be the oldest piece of plumbing on the property.

We clean, camera and measure the run before discussing replacing the lateral or lining it. Where digging would tear up a mature yard or a front walk, a trenchless method may let us renew the line through two small pits.

Common jobs

The plumbing calls we get most in Old North End

How we handle whole-house repiping

Galvanized supply patched with copper over the decades is the norm in homes this old.

How we handle sewer line replacement

Clay tile laterals from the early 1900s are often cracked, offset or full of roots.

How we handle sewer camera inspection

A century-old lateral needs to be seen on video before choosing between lining and digging.

Lead service line replacement

Old service lines, including any lead line the utility flags, are the owner's to replace.

Leaking packing nuts

Hidden or seized main valves turn small leaks in old walls into big ones.

Kitchen & Bath Remodel Plumbing: what it costs and how it runs

Kitchen and bath updates in historic homes usually mean replacing the old drain and supply behind the new fixtures.

Lead service lines and the shut-off nobody can find

City code in Colorado Springs does not allow lead service lines on the water system. If the utility finds one, it notifies the owner and records that notice each year with the El Paso County Recorder until the whole line is replaced. The private side, from the right-of-way to the house, is the owner's to replace.

Old houses also hide the main shut-off: behind a basement shelf, under a stair, or as a gate valve that no longer turns. We find it, test it and swap in a full-port ball valve if it fails. Patty Jewett listings run east into Knob Hill, where the 1960s stock brings its own galvanized and cast iron work.
